Accessories can take the pain out of kayaking
Friday, 29 August 2008

Sometimes it seems my father chose the most painfully difficult method possible for projects.

I think he equated ease and comfort with laziness, while I mostly looked for the easiest most comfortable means to an end.

He was a mechanical engineer with a meticulous nature and a near-obsession for detail regardless of how mundane or routine the chore might be. He never uttered the words "That's good enough" or "That'll do for now."

No question, he was darned handy around the house if he had the time to

Imagine the skill involved with that 20-inch trout. Even Walton suggests throwing the rod into the stream after hooking a really large trout, and somehow retrieving it when the trout has tired.

Perfection in land of hoppers and droppers
Friday, 22 August 2008
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The first year Pat Stefanek spent in Steamboat Springs (1991), he had three jobs, just trying to make ends meet. One thing he knew for sure. He'd do whatever it took to live his version of a Rocky Mountain high.

"I was lucky because I made my passion my living," said Stefanek, master fishing guide and river keeper for three miles of upscale private trout waters on Marabou Ranch, just outside of Steamboat Springs, and 40 miles of private trout waters on North Park Fishing Club in nearby Walden, Colo.

When kayakfishing the tidal flats of the Gulf Coast, the wind and current can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I've experienced sixty mile per hour winds and I've experienced dead calm, but more often than not, the wind is in the mid to high twenty's, a mild gale to some folks, but here on the Gulf, its something we have to learn to live with. We can try to negotiate with God all we want, but in His great wisdom, he knows how much wind we NEED to sustain life in the estuaries.
