Biologists Assess Ike Impacts To Coastal Ecosystems
Monday, 06 October 2008

AUSTIN, Texas — Hurricane Ike’s big storm surge caused hundreds of localized oil and hazardous materials spills that pose threats to fish and wildlife, and it pushed saltwater into upper coast freshwater wetlands that support migrating waterfowl and estuarine life. But ecological damage to coastal habitats may not be as widespread or severe as some had initially feared.

McGinnis Extra Stout, Sure to Cause a Froth
Monday, 06 October 2008
Tier, outfitting manager, and guide for Grizzly Hackle in Missoula Montana, Matt McGinnis has fished Montana waters all his life. A self-proclaimed “streamer junkie,” Matt is always looking for a new streamer pattern with which to catch more trout. The McGinnis Extra Stout has proven to be the most productive pattern he’s ever invented, and is one of the most effective streamers in the Missoula area rivers, period. I caught up with McGinnis in Missoula the day after he did a cast and blast for mallards and fall browns.

Beginners Corner: Choosing the right leader length
Friday, 05 September 2008

Get Sly with Dave Hise’s Family Stone Selection
Friday, 05 September 2008
Sly & the Family StonesOne of the first days I knew the Sly and the Family Stone pattern was a winner was an unseasonably warm, late February day on an unnamed Michigan stream, where air temps topped 70°. Such a day in Michigan this time of the year is an extremely unusual occurrence. Along with the beautiful weather, came an intense behavioral drift of both Allocapnia and Taeniopteryx stonefly nymphs; the tailouts, the river’s edge, and the bushes and ground along the bank were literally slithering with these slim bodied stones. Soon after, the adults began fluttering clumsily about and the trout and birds were taking full advantage of the stonefly buffet. The drift lasted most of the afternoon and we even witnessed numerous steelhead skimming the waters surface taking the nymphs out of the film; a beautiful sight! The Sly got into the trout and steelhead unbelievably well. Needless to say, we had more than a productive day catching both trout and steelhead on these small wiggle stone patterns.
