The Fifth Annual Octoberfisch fly fishing festival went off without a hitch under clear blue skies and excellent fall weather last weekend. The fly fishing was excellent on the South Llano River out of Junction. An assortment of fish from Kentucky spotted bass to Rio Grande perch were caught on an assortment of flies.

Record setting redfish caught on the fly in Laguna

Corpus Christi angler Dr. E. Stanton Shoemaker used a white Polar Bear slider to catch a new fly fished state record redfish on Oct. 1. The red was 48 inches long, and weighed 39.12 pounds. Shoemaker says he made the record-setting catch while fishing the upper Laguna Madre.

Fly fishing icon Mel Krieger has died

Early Tuesday, October 7, 2008, Mel Krieger passed away.  He had been very ill for a while but died peacefully.  He leaves a legacy of years of experience in fly fishing, which he has passed on to those of us in the fly fishing world through his many books and instructional videos. He will be missed.
